Samsung Tries to Stop iPhone 4S Sales in Oz & Japan
Samsung opened a new front in its global patent war with Apple Monday when it asked courts in both Japan and Australia to block sales of Apple’s new iPhone 4S. It’s also trying to get iPad 2 and the iPhone 4 outlawed in Japan.
In Australia Samsung has charged Apple with violating three wireless Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) and HSPA patents that are 3G-standards essential, a factor deemed to reduce its chances of succeeding.
A Dutch court Friday threw out a Samsung bid to enjoin the iPhone and iPad based on those kinds of patents. Apple also claims patent rights to Samsung widgetry via Qualcomm whose chips it uses.
