This is a brief test video to evaluate the Belkin iPhone Boom Mic, a $40 directional mic that fits onto an iPhone and plugs into the 4-pin headphone & mic socket. It's designed to fit the flat casing of the iPhone 4, but it works on the 3GS even though its curved case isn't ideal. It will also work on Android phones with the same 4-pin TRRS socket but you need to check out whether the camera lens is close to the mic socket because the mounting knob of the Boom Mic might obscure the lens. I think you'll find that the Boom Mic's 'Wide' setting is far better than 'Narrow'. It's not a broadcast-quality mic but it's more directional than the iPhone's internal mic - which, although good quality, faces sideways. In any case, even if it didn't sound intrinsically any better, it would still be worth it because you can add a windshield to the Boom Mic - wind noise is a major drawback on the internal mic. I'm thinking of trying a Rycote Smoothie windshield with it. It runs on an AAA battery, fits in your pocket and I'm glad I bought it. |
