Is Apple looking to make its own knockoff of Pandora? Pandora, the streaming radio service that recommends music based on song or artist suggestions entered into a virtual radio "station," might soon see some serious competition from Apple, according to the Wall Street Journal. It would be a big move from the computer giant--though their iTunes "Genius" feature, which tries to predict what music you might want to listen to next based on your current track, would be a good jumping off point. Some think the iTunes program could be tweaked to work much like Pandora's Music Genome Project—a continually updated database that looks to log basic musical characteristics and determine listeners' preferences. That could mean trouble for Pandora, which enjoys a bit of a corner on the predictive music choosing market. Then again, many of us iTunes users know that Genius isn't exactly known for being...genius. |
