Nike + iPod: Sensor not recognized by receiver, iPod touch (2nd generation), or iPhone 3GS

If you see the Nike+iPod menu or application on your iPod nano, iPod touch (2nd generation), or iPhone 3GS, but are not able to link to your sensor, try troubleshooting with the following steps:
