Even with advent of new pipeline capacity, ability to reach refineries unconnected by pipeline makes rail an enduring part of North American oil transport

(December 11, 2014) – The amount of crude oil transported by rail in North America could peak between 2015 and 2016 at about 1.5 million barrels per day (mbd), though rail is expected to remain a key component of North American oil production over the long term, says a new report by IHS (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of critical information and insight. At its anticipated peak, more than 10 percent of North American production is expected to get to market by rail.
