How can you "see" your pulse with an iPhone 4 camera? Watch and learn!

This is what those "heart rate" apps see when you put your finger against the camera lens: they measure your pulse by tracking the varying intensity of color in your finger. This pulsation is the result of all the blood traveling through tiny capillaries in your fingertip. If you have an iPhone 4 or 4S, you can try it yourself. The trick to getting the right amount of color is not pressing too hard; a light touch will yield a bright orange-red field, in which the pulsing is easily recognizable. Pressing too hard will squeeze the blood away from the finger and cause it to turn pale yellow on the screen.
