Official iPhone 5 Preview

Apple's upcoming iPhone 5 unveiling could spell the end for the 3GS as the company's lowest-price handset. The Guardian cited company sources in reporting that Apple plans to end retail availability of the handset upon release of the new model. The reports indicate that the company would slide the iPhone 4 into the entry-level spot, while the iPhone 4S and the new model would be offered as higher-price options. While Apple has yet to announce any plans for pricing on the new model, the report is consistent with Apple's pricing history on its products. New models are typically offered at the price point of previous models, while the oldest models are cycled out of availability. The report comes just days before Apple is slated to announce the new model. Popularly referred to as the iPhone 5, the handset has long been pegged for a Fall unveiling and release in the US and Europe. Among the features of the handset noted in reports, which have largely arisen from manufacturer leaks, will be a slimmer profile and larger screen. Apple is believed to be using a unique metal alloy to replace the glass back panel on the casing. The company is also said to be equipping the handset with LTE broadband connectivity and a smaller connector port. Features which have been anticipated by V3 staff include NFC connectivity, larger screen sizes and an improved text input system. Apple has yet to provide any official word on the handset ahead of the 12 September event.
